Ski Arlberg – the cradle of skiing

The Arlberg, a boomerang

Anyone who has visited the Arlberg once will be certain to come back again - just like a boomerang. 350 km of perfectly prepared pistes at all difficulty levels, 200 km of deep snow slopes and 97 modern lift systems, that's Ski Arlberg – Warth-Schröcken, Lech-Zürs, Stuben, St.Christoph, and St.Anton.

Ski Arlberg in figures

First settled by the Walser people in the 11th century, the Arlberg continues to stand for passion and daring to this day. Many of the local people eked out a hand to mouth existence and were very poor. The region's economic survival was only secured with the advent of tourism in the Arlberg region, starting in the 1930s. The words can be confused, so let us allow the numbers to speak for themselves:

  • 350 km of perfectly prepared ski slopes at every difficulty level, with
  • 146 km blue pistes
  • 147 km red pistes
  • 55 km black pistes
  • 97 modern cable transportation facilities, with
  • 13 cable cars
  • 50 chair lifts
  • 34 ski lifts, many with the heated seating that was invented in the Arlberg region
  • 26 ski conveyor belts in the children's and/or beginners' areas

A priest

In 1894, Warth priest Johann Müller finally had enough of tramping through the deep snow to get to the neighbouring village of Lech am Arlberg. He ordered two wooden boards from Sweden that enabled him to glide across the snow. He trained in secret at night and the rest, as people say, is history.

A skier

Hannes Schneider developed the Arlberg style, which is known to this day far beyond the peaks of the Arlberg. With the construction of the first ski lifts in 1937 (a tow lift and the first winter gondola), skiing became accessible to the wider general public.

A ski link

The Arlberg stands for revolutionary ideas and crazy dreams that become true. After several years of planning, Warth-Schröcken am Hochtannberg is now part of the Arlberg skiing region. Enjoy the results of a revolutionary idea – the Auenfeldtjet.
